About Winnipeg Centre of Hope

Rooted in community, since 1897

Who We Are

For more than 35 years, The Salvation Army’s Winnipeg Centre of Hope has had the privilege of serving those in need in the downtown core of Winnipeg. We are a community expressing Christ’s promise of new beginnings and provide hope by enriching lives through His love and compassion.
Our shelter programs include emergency dorms, transitional rooms, and SonRise family shelter.

Our History

In 1897 The Salvation Army Men’s Social Services Department operated a workmen’s Hostel on the corner of Logan Avenue and Fountain Street. The hostel provided food and shelter to the needy. Over the years The Salvation Army has provided similar services from a variety of downtown locations.
The current Winnipeg Centre of Hope opened in 1988 as a residence for single men. This has now evolved into its current inception; a housing-first facility serving over 250 individuals in need of immediate access to housing as listed below:

  • Transitional Housing: 182 private rooms
  • Emergency Dorms: 45 spaces
  • SonRise Family Shelter: 13 suites that accommodate to the size of families.
